Want a quick and FREE harem shorts pattern? Keep reading! 🙂
This pattern offers two options. You can make it with rib knit waistband or with an elastic waistband like I did.
For this outfit, I recycled my old T-shirt to make Little Brother a T-shirt using THIS pattern.
What you’ll need:
- the PATTERN
- fabric: this pattern was intended for use with knits. Fabric with a slight stretch is preferred (jersey, interlock, sweat…). 30 cm (3/8 yard) for sizes 0-2, 45 cm (5/8 yard) for sizes 2-7.
- elastic or rib knit (I recommend you measure your child’s waist and cut the waistband/elastic accordingly. If that’s not possible I included a chart for elastic length)
Print and assemble the pattern and cut the right size according to the size guide.
Once you decide how you want to do your waistband, cut all the pattern pieces. Only cut one waistband piece (for waist with elastic or rib knit waistband).
Place front and back piece right sides together and sew side seams and inseam.
Fold the thigh cuffs on half and sew the short edges.
If you decided to make pants with rib knit waistband, fold the piece in half, sew the band into a circle, sew it onto the pants and your pants are finished. That simple! 🙂
But if you decided to make the elastic waistband like me, there’s some more sewing to do….
Overlap your elastic by 1 cm/inch and sew it together to form a circle.
Fold the waistband in half, right sides together and sew it into a circle.
I recently discovered elastic with a built-in cord and had to try it (It’s genius!! I have no idea how come I never ran into this elastic before!), so my procedure is slightly different on the pictures…
But you can use your normal elastic and serge it on the waistband or make a casing and put the elastic in…
After securing the elastic in place….
… I folded the waistband in half, placed it on the top of the pants and sewed it on.
And the harem shorts are done! 🙂
